Completing the series of the craziest games on the web, as we tackled before in Super Pointless Internet Craze (Lying Down Game), the new pastime of moneyfacing – the act of placing a banknote in front of one’s face – is the newest craze to infect the web.
Participants are photographed with a banknote strategically placed in front of their face, so creating an often bizarre-looking ‘hybrid’ or ‘third’ face.
Usually either the upper or lower half of the banknote is used to create the fusion, although on occasion the entire banknote is used and visually conjoined with the person’s shoulders to generate a full-body effect.

The composition is often at its most amusing when a regular human face is combined with facial features that one would not expect to find there.

Examples of this include a woman using a £10 note to give herself the abundant, luxuriant beard of Charles Darwin, or a man using the top half of a banknote to make it appear as if he is wearing the Queen’s crown.

Banknotes from as far afield as the USA and Singapore have been unwitting accessories to the craze, which is a variation on the theme of ‘sleevefacing’, a previous internet trend where people obscure their faces with album covers.

The concept of being photographed in amusing or unconventional poses has been one of the more subtle legacies of the rise of the internet.
